Lopers and Lions Battle to a Draw on a Rainy Night at Cope

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney and Missouri Southern soccer teams battled to a scoreless draw Friday night at Foster Field.

It should have come as no surprise the Lopers (2-4-3, 0-2-1) and Lions (1-4-2, 0-0-1) were fit to be tied at the end of a rainy night. The series continues to be in MSSU's favor by a 5-3-6 margin with the past three contests resulting in a draw.

"We showed as much fight in that game as we've had all season. No matter what was thrown at them, they stepped back into the ring and were ready to fight some more. I love that because (MSSU) is a very scrappy team, hard and physical team," said Loper head coach Rob Breton. "We need to continue to grow in our composure against physical teams. There were times you could see us passing around them and it was phenomenal but then we'd take a half second too long and now the close on us and are on top of us."

UNK came in having more shots and more shots on goal than its opponents and that didn't change tonight as the Blue & Gold had 11 including five on point. However, senior keeper Bella Smith had five saves.

"What a save from their keeper with Vanna (Reitsma's) tap in. That's the way the cookie crumbles for us right now," said Breton. "At the same time, how great is it that we're creating this much offense and putting ourselves in those situations."

Loper junior keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln) also stopped five shots with the Lions taking three more corners, 7-4. Nine different UNK players got off a shot including two from both Reitsma (Papillion) and junior Serene Hamzeh (Iowa City). Finally, the game featured two yellow cards and 19 fouls.

"This is our third clean sheet at home this year. That's huge for us," said Breton.

The 19th-ranked Central Missouri Jennis (7-1-0, 2-0-0) come to Cope Stadium Sunday at high noon.
