UNK Battles But Falls to #19 UCM

Kearney, Neb. – The 19th-ranked Central Missouri Jennies scored twice in each half to defeat Nebraska Kearney, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Foster Field.

UCM (8-1-0, 3-0-0) has now won six straight by a combined score of 25-0. The Lopers (2-5-3, 0-3-1), meanwhile, drop their first home contest of the year.Reegen McKee

The Jens scored four minutes into the action when sophomore Coryn Jespersen found sophomore Hazel Douglas-Trotman right after a free kick. With literally seconds left in the half, senior Ryann Clark headed in a corner taken by sophomore Kara Robinson.

UNK then blanked UCM for almost the next 40 minutes. In between, the Lopers increased possession and got off several shots. Overall, both teams had six shots after the break.

"We might not have been on the front foot a lot in the first half, but we gave up just two set piece goals. It wasn't goals from live play; we shut off for one moment in the second half and they finally got another goal," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "Realistically, the first three goals are all on us. Don't get me wrong; they are a great team and that's why they are nationally ranked every year and will be in the NCAA Tournament again. We must have that confidence and belief that we can play consistently all the time."

UCM finally broke through again in the 81st minute and then tacked on another goal about six minutes later. Both keepers ended with three saves with UNK getting shots on goal from senior Iliana Wurzbacher (Atchison, Kan.), sophomore Shaeley Reichmuth (Omaha), and freshman Vanna Reitsma (Papillion).

"We have to start being honest with ourselves why does this keep happening to us and what are we going to do. How do they players step up in those moments and be able to say this is unacceptable and we're not going to do this anymore," said Breton. "I love the fight, effort, and intensity we had on the weekend. Those are foundational pieces that we need; now it's focus, intentionality and applying what we do every single day."

UNK returns to the road next weekend to face the Newman Jets (0-7-2, 0-3-0) and the Washburn Ichabods (6-1-1, 2-1-0).
