Molina's Record Jump Highlights Final Indoor Home Meet

Marty Molina
Kearney, Neb. - Sophomore Marty Molina broke the Nebraska-Kearney school record in the triple jump Friday night at the UNK All-Comer meet in Cushing Coliseum.

The non-team scoring meet
also featured Chadron State, Fort Hays State and Bethany College. This was the Lopers last home meet of the indoor season.

A Kearney High graduate, Molina had three big jumps tonight with his best effort going 50-1.25. That breaks the school mark of 49-11.75, set by John Laux in Feb. 2003.

Molina's leap also automatic qualifies him for the NCAA Championships next month and is the sixth best mark in Division II this year. His previous best jump this winter was 49-7.

Also improving their standing on the national lists were senior Rich Mourer (Colorado Springs) in the weight throw and senior Kiley Peterson (Gothenburg) in the shot. Next, senior Nick Theis (Grand Island) put his name on the national list in the weight throw with senior Spencer Huff (York) tying his season-best effort in the long jump.

Mourer won the weight throw with a toss of 62-5, a mark that should put him in the top 10 next week. Theis (57-5) came in 3rd in this event.

Franklin senior Sam Murphy won the women's shot (47-11.25), an effort just short of her season-high of 48-0. Peterson was runner up here (44-4.75) with Huff once again recording an automatic qualifying  jump of 24-1.75. That figure currently ranks him 5th nationally.

In other women's events, UNK went 1-2 at 200, 400 and 800 meters. Winning were junior Jessie Golden (200/26.79), freshman Karley Piper (400/1:00.49) and sophomore Brooke Harris (800/2:21.48).

Hamilton and Piper helped the Lopers win the 4 x 400 relay (4:05.45) with sophomore Amy Long winning the mile in a time of 5:22.81. Finally, senior Tracie Chanady won the weight throw (53.7.50).

Back on the men's side, Huff had the best time in the 60 meter prelims (7.04); he would place 5th (7.09) in the finals. UNK would go 1-2 at 200 (Alex Paul; 22.72) and 400 meters (Nate Rogers; 52.02) and also take the top spot in the 4 x 400 relay (3:26.96).

UNK heads back to UNL next Friday for the Nebraska Tune Up.
