Tennis Finishes Up Spring Break Trip 3-1

Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams finished up a busy week by sweeping Division II newcomer Illinois-Springfield and splitting with Missouri-St. Louis.

The Loper men are now 7-4 on the spring with the women 6-5. A scheduled women's dual with Division II newcomer Maryville (Mo.), scheduled for Thursday, was canceled and will not be made up.

On the men's side, the UMSL Tritons earned its first dual win of the year by nipping the Lopers, 5-4. The tables turned the next day as UNK got by the UIS Prairie Stars, 5-4.

At No. 1 singles in St. Louis, Andreas Hammar beat sophomore Josh Raymond in three sets (6-4, 7-6, 6-4).  Freshman Revel Yehezkia (6-3, 6-7, 6-3) and Kyle Conzemius (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) did pull two close wins to give the Lopers a chance.

Kearney led the dual 2-1 after doubles.

In Springfield, UNK again led 2-1 and then won at No. 1, 5 and 6 singles to pick up the win. Raymond (7-5, 6-1) and No. 6 player Aaron Angst (6-1, 7-6) had key victories with Angst and Rodrigo Duncan winning at No. 3 doubles (8-6).

The Loper women had an easier time, blanking UIS, 9-0, and beating UMSL, 7-2.

Against the Tritons, Katie-Mary Outhwaite (7-6, 6-2), Mizuki Takahashi (6-7, 6-3, 10-5) and Melissa Lyster (3-6, 7-5, 11-9) had close wins with Nickola Messbarger and Takahashi winning by an 8-6 score at No. 2 doubles.

Junior Claire Bryan (6-3, 2-6, 10-4) had the toughest battle against Springfield.

This Friday at Harmon Park (or the Buffalo County Fairgrounds), Minnesota State, Mesa State and Metro State visit to play a series of duals.

UNK is now scheduled to face MSU on Friday (4:00 p.m.) and the Mavericks (9:00 a.m.) and the Roadrunners (1:00 p.m.) on Saturday. Those duals will be non-RMAC affairs.
