Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney track & field team tuned up for the RMAC Outdoor Championships by winning 13 events (seven men and six women) Friday night at the UNK Twilight meet at Kearney High.
The
non-team scoring meet included student-athletes from Black Hills State (S.D.), Chadron State, Fort Hays State and York College. Also on Friday, Thomas Neeman and
Quinn Willet competed in the steeplechase at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls.
Throwers
Dane Tobey (Waco) and
Sam Murphy (Franklin) once again led the Lopers cause.
Coming off a win in the shot put at the Drake Relays, Tobey smashed his own school record in the discus (183-7; April 2006) by having a throw of 186-10.
Tobey already lead the nation in the discus thanks to 180-8 at the Nebraska Invite. Nolan Eubanks of Tarleton State (Texas) ranked second last week at 179-7.
Benkelman sophomore
Kyle Glidden was fourth in this event as well with a solid throw of 163-6.
Tobey's day wasn't done as he also won the shot thanks to another automatic qualifying throw of 58-4.75. In the hammer, Colorado Springs senior
Rich Mourer put his name on the national list with a third place throw of 184-8. Grand Island senior
Nick Theis was close behind in fourth (179-9).
In the women's throws, Murphy won the shot with an automatic qualifying toss of 48-2. That effort would rank her fifth on last week's national list. Coming in second place was Gothenburg senior
Kiley Peterson (43-8.50).
Murphy was one of four Lopers to place in the top five in the discus, coming in second at 144-9. Sargent senior
Tracie Chanady put her name on the national list as she threw 141-8, good for third place.
Finally, Murphy was runner up in the hammer (162-2).
Besides Murphy, Loper women to win their respective event included Colorado senior Cameron in the 400 hurdles (1:04.64), Minatare sophomore
Amy Long at 3,000 meters (10:43.6), Imperial freshman
Erica Pirog in the 800 (2:18.49) and Pleasanton freshman
Kristi Bauer in the high jump (5-3).
UNK also won the 4 x 100 relay in a time of 48.99.
The Loper men went 1-2 in the triple jump as
Marty Molina went 48-9 and
Clifford Bodie came in at 47-8. That allowed Bodie (Freeport, Bahamas) to be a provisional qualifier for the first time this spring.
On the track, Chadron sophomore
Allen Osborn won the 110 hurdles (14.93), Gothenburg sophomore
Alex Paul was victorious in the 400 (48.15) and Lincoln freshman
Derek Schnell won at 800 meters (1:59.69). Finally, Paul helped the 4 x 100 relay team take the gold (41.87).
In Sioux Falls, Neeman finished seventh (9:33.98) and Willet eighth (9:38.73) in a field of 16.
UNK is at the RMAC's May 9-11 in Pueblo, Colo.
