Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney men's golf team opened up its 2010-211 season by shooting a 54-hole total of
915 to finish in ninth place at the Peaks Classic Tuesday in La Veta, Colo.
The 15-team event, which featured every school in the RMAC that sponsors men's golf plus five other institutions, was played at the par 72 Grandote Peaks Golf Club.
UNK had efforts of 309 and 303 on the first day to -- apparently -- sit in 10th place. However, junior
C.A. Everson (Pasco, Wash.) was disqualified in the second round so his 71 didn't count. Thus, the Lopers second round score officially jumped to a 318 and the team entered Tuesday in 12th place.
The Lopers bounced back from that by having the low team score (288) on Tuesday. All five UNK golfers, including Everson, shot a 75 or below today. Because he was disqualified in a round, Everson didn't place in the final results.
Thanks to that low third round, UNK moved past three teams into ninth, an important note come postseason time. Colorado-Colorado Springs (866) easily won the title with Fort Lewis second (680) and tourney host Wayland Baptist of Texas coming in third (888).
Individually, Kearney senior
Alex Farrell tied for 13th place with a seven over par 223 (77-74-72). He had the second most birdies (13) in the tournament and was even par on par three holes. Brian Morfeld earned medalist honors with a sizzling seven under par 209 (70-67-72).
Rounding out UNK's lineup was Lincoln junior
Justin Stonacek (T-31st/229), North Platte sophomore
Jordan Arensdorf (T-53rd; 237) and Fremont junior
Garrett Goldsberry (55th/238).
The Lopers head to Valentine (The Prairie Club) this coming Monday and Tuesday.
