Cottam, Lopers in Second after Day Two

Men's Golf | 4/24/2018 2:41:00 PM

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Jay Cottam fired a 4-under 68 to help the Nebraska-Kearney men's golf team be tied for second after day two of the MIAA Championships in Spring Hill, Kan.

The 11-team, 54-hole event is being played at the par 72 Sycamore Ridge Golf Course. Note the MIAA men's golf team and individual champions are not decided by this tournament but by the aggregate results of four events throughout the year. This is one of those four tourneys; UNK was in sixth place after the first three events.

After a 297 on Monday, the Lopers shot a 289 today (586) to be tied with 26th-ranked Central Missouri for second. No. 42 Lindenwood is at a 2-under 574 (297-277) to have a healthy lead. The first place finisher receives the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Central/Midwest Super Regional May 7-9 in Findlay, Ohio.

Cottam (Hebron) tied his best round as a Loper by having one eagle, four birdies and 11 pars. He also shot a 68 in the first round of the 2016 UNK Fall Invitational at Awarii Dunes.

He did have two bogeys today including one on the ninth hole. He played the back nine first and eagled the par 5 18th hole (525 yards). Cottam had a 73 on Monday (total of 3-under 141) to be a stroke behind Lindenwood's Yente Van Doren (74-66). Two others are below par as well.

Currently at an even par 144 is English senior Bradley Hill. Tied for fifth, he had three birdies and 12 pars today. Next, Kearney sophomore Cody Troudt is tied for 15th with a 3-over 147 (76-71). He is tied for the tourney lead in pars with 26. Finally, Bancroft senior Preston Peters is tied for 41st (154; 76-78) and Kearney freshman Austin Murray is 49th (159; 78-81).

The final round begins Wednesday morning.
