Soccer Loses in Overtime to 10th-Ranked Fort Lewis

Raliegh Mercer
Kearney, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Kearney women's soccer team was defeated in overtime by Fort Lewis College, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Cope Stadium.

With today's win, the Skyhawks improve their record to 5-1 and to 1-1 in the RMAC while the Lopers fall to 4-2 (1-1 RMAC). Fort Lewis, who has won three of the last four RMAC Tournaments, was the preseason choice to win the conference.

After a scoreless first half, the Lopers would strike first with a goal by freshman Raliegh Mercer (Arapahoe, Colo.), her second on the season, in the 81st minute. The score came off of a free kick about 21 yards out that found the top left corner of the net.

Instead of a major win for the upstart UNK program, Fort Lewis would score off a corner kick taken by Erika Shisler, which led to a header by Sara Egbom, with 34 seconds left in regulation to tie things at one.

In overtime, the Skyhawks had a great chance to end the game with a shot by Shisler that, instead, hit the post and then the rebound shot by Kortney Hull missed the goal and sailed high.

However, at the 99th minute, FLC would score the game winning goal off of a corner kick, which was again taken by Shisler. She placed the ball right in front of the Loper goal where Hayley Hollenga kicked the ball into the back of the net for the win.

On a cool and rainy afternoon, the Skyhawks outshot the Lopers 16-6, including 9-3 advantage in the second half and overtime.

UNK goes on the road for two games against Colorado Christian on Friday and CSU-Pueblo on Sunday.
