Kearney, Neb. - Freshmen
Becka Talcott and
Caitlin Parra scored first half goals to lift the Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team to a
2-1 win at Colorado State-Pueblo Sunday afternoon.
This is the Lopers (5-3, 2-1 RMAC) first-ever RMAC road win. With the setback, CSUP falls to 3-5 (1-3 RMAC) on the season.
UNK's leading scorer on the year, Talcott (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) scored the program's fastest goal with she tallied her fourth of the year 2:52 into the game. After Pueblo goalie
Savannah Thompson saved a shot from Talcott but failed to secure the ball, Talcott hit the rebound shot into the net.
About 25 minutes later, Thompson misplayed a shot taken by Parra (Bellevue West H.S.), who knocked the loose ball into the net for a 2-0 Loper lead.
Late in the game, Pueblo's Esther Villa scored her first goal of the year, a shot that found the upper left corner of the UNK goal. However, Pueblo didn't get a shot on goal after that.
On the day, Pueblo out shot the Lopers, 22-16, including a 13-6 edge after halftime. Sophomore
Marissa Niday (Fremont) made five saves in the first half and earned the win while fellow keeper Vanessa Leeper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) stopped six shots in the second half.
The Lopers host nationally-ranked Metro State next Sunday in Kearney. Prior to that, they play at RMAC power Colorado Mines on Friday afternoon.
