Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams got ready for the NCAA Tournament this weekend by sweeping Hastings College Wednesday in Kearney and beating Concorida Thursday in Seward.
Both Loper teams adjusted their lineups a bit with only
the Broncos No. 3 doubles team managing to score a point. The women are now 17-7 while the men improve to 18-7
In Seward, sophomores
Kyle Conzemius (Lincoln Pius) and
John Steinke (Grand Island) moved up to No. 1 doubles and recorded an 8-2 victory. True freshman
Eric Brown (Holdrege) had the most doimant singles win, beating Mike McCartney (6-1, 6-0) in the sixth spot.
The Loper No. 1 women's doubles team of freshmen
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) and
Cassie Shaw (Flower Mound, Texas) shut out their opponent, 8-0, and then Gunawan did the same at No. 1 singles. Also winning by a 6-0, 6-0 score was junior
Nickola Messbarger (Kearney Catholic) in the fourth position.
Against Hastings at Harmon Park, freshman
Yeswanth Nadella (India) played No. 1 singles and recorded a 6-1, 7-5 win with junior
Rodrigo Duncan (Mexico) bumping up a slot to No. 2 singles and winning 6-4, 7-5.
Dunan and freshman
Josh Smith (Independence, Mo.) also managed an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
On the women's side, all three Loper doubles team won by 8-0 scores. Hastings then scored only 13 points in the top singles matches with freshman Candance Green (Kearney) blanking her foe at No. 6 singles.
This Sunday, the women play at Augustana (SD) in an NCAA tourney match with the men hosting Montana State-Billings Monday at 3:00 p.m. in their NCAA dual.
