Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams both swept Hastings College, and lost to Division II Lewis University, Saturday at Harmon Park.
The Loper men are now 3-6 with the UNK women at 3-5.
Against the Flyers from Romeoville, Ill., the Loper women fell
5-4 while a less than 100% UNK men's team lost
7-2. Both LU squads have nationally-ranked individuals.
In the women's dual, senior
Nickola Messbarger (Kearney Catholic) lost a third-set tiebreaker to Brianna Markgraf, thus giving Lewis (8-1) the dual win.
This marked the Lopers third 5-4 loss in its last four duals.
UNK led 2-1 after doubles with sophomore
Candace Green (Kearney) winning in three sets at No. 6 singles and sophomore
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) losing a three-set match at No. 1 singles.
On the men's side against the Flyers (7-1), sophomore
Yeswanth Nadella (India) won in straight sets at No. 2 singles with sophomore
Josh Smith (Independence, Mo.) winning 10-8 in the third set to win in the sixth spot.
The Lopers then stayed on the courts and swept the Broncos by
9-0 scores. Junior Kyle Cozemius (Lincoln Pius) had the toughest battle, going three sets to beat Brian Freeman at No. 4 singles (4-6, 6-4, 10-4).
UNK heads to Illinois over Spring Break to take part in the U. of Illinois-Springfield Dual Tournament Friday and Saturday. The next day, the Lopers will travel up the road to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Quincy U. Hawks.
