Kearney, Neb. - The Washburn Ichabods and Lady Blues won some close matches to sweep Nebraska-Kearney,
7-2 (men) and 5-4 (women), Thursday night in Topeka, Kans.
The Loper men (3-2) fell behind 2-1 after doubles as the Ichabods (3-1) won by 9-8 scores in both the second and third positions.
Senior
Josh Raymond (Elkhorn) earned an impressive win at No. 1 singles with a tough 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win over Polish sophomore Arkadiusz Kozaczuk. Both are among their regions's top singles and doubles players.
However, UNK couldn't pick up another win in singles as Chance Joost managed a 3-6, 7-6, 10-6 win over junior
Arin Enge (Olathe, Kans.) in the sixth spot and the rest of the 'Bods won in straight sets.
On the women's side, the Lopers (2-2) led 2-1 after doubles as sophomores
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) and
Heather Connolly (Highland Village, Texas) won 8-2 in the top spot and senior
Nickola Messbarger (Kearney Catholic) and freshman
Tealyn Trimble (Kearney H.S.) won 8-5 in the third position.
Gunwan (No. 1/6-2, 6-1) and Kearney sophomore
Candace Green (No. 6/6-2, 6-1) won their respective singles matches but WU (2-2) managed a couple of 7-5 set wins to take the other four matches.
UNK plays NW Missouri State and William Jewell this weekend.
