Tennis Sweeps 'Dawgs to End the Regular Season

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams finished up the regular season by sweeping Concordia, 9-0 (women) and 8-1 (men), Monday evening at Harmon Park.

The Loper women (16-6) have won 10 in a row while the UNK men (15-8) bounce back from a loss to Western New Mexico on Saturday.

With the RMAC Tournament just days away, both teams used several young players against the NAIA Bulldogs. Showing its dominance, the UNK women allowed just two points in three doubles matches while the men out scored Concordia 24-5 in doubles

On the women's side, freshman Kelly Messbarger (Kearney Catholic H.S.) won at No. 6 singles by a 6-1, 6-0 score with fellow Kearney natives Candace Green (No. 4) and Tealyn Trimble (No. 5) winning their singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 margins.

Freshman Jack Nicholson (England), normally the Lopers No. 4 singles player, bumped up three spots today and won 6-1, 6-1 over Jeremy Jank. Others to win in straight sets included Grand Island freshman Lance Kush (No. 4) and Missouri sophomore Mason Tedesco (No. 5).

UNK leaves Thursday morning for this weekend's RMAC Tournament in Denver. The second-seeded men play Friday at 9:00 a.m. against Colorado Christian while the No. 1-seeded Loper women have a first round bye and won't play until Friday night.

Both teams are looking for their fourth RMAC tourney titles.
