Softball Continues Hot Streak, Sweeps 'Hawks

Kirstie Hiatt
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Junior Becky Dunn tossed a four-hit complete game shut out and senior Kirstie Hiatt allowed one run in seven innings as Nebraska-Kearney swept a double header from Fort Lewis, 5-2 and 2-0, Saturday at Dryden Park.

By winning 16 of its last 18 conference games, the Lopers (24-20, 21-13 RMAC) enter the final day of the regular season with a chance to host the RMAC Tournament next weekend.

For that to happen, UNK would need to go 2-0 against the Skyhawks (24-23, 22-16 RMAC) on Sunday and see both Colorado School of Mines (currently 24-14) and Colorado State-Pueblo (currently 23-14) go 1-1 or 0-2.

Mines is hosting Colorado Mesa this weekend and CSUP is hosting Western New Mexico. Both the Orediggers and ThunderWolves went 1-1 on Saturday.

Dunn (10-7), a right hander from Papillion, struck out five and walked just two in recording her second shut out of the year. Her first came on March 24th at Colorado-Colorado Springs.

UNK scored the only run it needed in the first when senior center fielder Austin Wilson (McCook) led off with a double and moved to third on a foul out. Fort Lewis then fielded a ground ball hit by freshman short stop Mallory Noakes (Lincoln SW) but, instead of getting the easy out, tried to get Wilson at home and failed.

In the fifth, senior 2b Ali Seberger (2 for 3) delivered an RBI single to left.

The offensive-minded 'Hawks left 12 runners on base in game one as they out hit the Lopers by three, 9-6. However, UNK took advantage of three errors to score four unearned runs and win by three.

A three-run Loper fifth featured an RBI singles by Wilson (2 for 4, two RBI's) and sophomore LF Whitney Frederick (Blair). Hiatt improved to 13-9 by fanning four and working out of jams in the several innings.

The two teams will play a double header starting at 10:00 a.m. Central. That is an hour earlier than normal.
