Soccer Goes Past Midnight to Stun Hornets

Kadie Walaszczyk tied the game with two ticks left
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team scored with two seconds left in regulation, and then tallied a goal six minutes into overtime, to stun Emporia State, 3-2, early Saturday morning at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

By rallying from a 2-0 half time deficit, the Lopers (6-3-1, 1-2-1) tie the school-record for wins and also claim its first-ever MIAA victory. Meanwhile, the Hornets fall to 3-5-3 (0-3-1).

The game started at 10:00 p.m. Friday and ended a little after Midnight thanks to a goal by junior forward Becka Talcott (Denver, Colo.), who just returned from the disabled last weekend.

UNK was a “woman up” the last 7:36 of regulation and in overtime as Emporia sophomore Ashleigh Harris picked up two yellow cards and was ejected from the contest.  ESU earned two other yellows and committed 22 fouls overall.

After being out played in the first half, UNK had Emporia on its heels the entire second half. Sophomore forward Ashtin Pawloski (Hastings) got the Lopers on the board about 10 minutes after the break as she raced down the center of the field and banged home a shot from 30 yards out.

Taking eight more shots than Emporia, UNK seemingly was headed for a 2-1 loss. But, with the clock literally winding down, freshman Mckinzie Rieber (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) sent a pass in front of the Hornets net that managed to find freshman Kadie Walaszczyk (Houston, Texas), who headed the ball in for an unlikely goal.

In the first half, the Hornets scored both of its goals by heading in corners.

Talcott, who earned All-RMAC honors as a freshman but has been bit by the injury bug since, got free in the extra session. Like Pawloski, she was in the middle of the field when she received a pass from Rieber and found the back of the net from around 20 yards away.

Washburn comes to town Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
