Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team scored goals in each half to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
The RiverHawks, ranked ninth in the NCSAA's Central Region rankings, improve to 9-2 (3-2) while the Lopers fall to 5-6-1 (2-3-1).
NSU wasted little time grabbing the lead, tallying a goal in the sixth minute. Senior midfielder Elizabeth Cudjoe, from Ghana, knifed through the Loper defense and made a nice pass to teammate Renee Valcarcel on the right wing.
The California native, from just outside the box, hit a ball that a diving
Katelin Mielke (Millard West) tipped but couldn't completely stop.
UNK seemingly tied the game about 25 minutes later when sophomore
Montanna Hosterman (Papillion-LaVista South) recorded a goal off an indirect kick from 30 yards out. However, the ball wasn't touched by anyone and the goal was taken off the board.
Kearney took seven shots in the second half but NSU freshman keeper Jordan Woodruff stopped each one. Finishing with nine saves, she now has five shut outs on the season.
The RiverHawks added an insurance goal in the 56th minute when they reversed the field on the Lopers. From the left wing, Cudjoe sent a pass to Emily Voges, who then found Jennifer Clark on the right wing. Clark, from around 18 yards out, recorded her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
"They are a good team but it wasn't our day," said UNK head coach
John Maessner. "We were coming off a weekend road trip where we played with great passion and energy. Those things were lacking a bit today and it showed in the result."
Five Lopers took two or more shots in the game, including Hosterman, sophomore
Breezy Jahnke (North Platte) and
Kristyn Otter (Millard North).
UNK hosts Central Oklahoma at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
