Nationally-Ranked SBU Sweeps Tennis Indoors

Kearney, Neb. – The nationally-ranked Southwest Baptist Bearcats tennis teams both beat Nebraska-Kearney by 7-2 scores Saturday afternoon in Grand Island.

The Lopers, regionally-ranked on both sides, fall to 9-2, 1-1 (women) and 7-5, 1-1 (men).

In the men's match, the 34th-ranked 'Cats (7-5, 1-1) managed to grab a 2-1 lead after doubles thanks to 8-6 victories in the first and second spots.

Senior Arin Enge (Olathe, Kans.) and sophomore Jack Nicholson (England) managed an 8-3 win for UNK at No. 3 doubles.

SBU then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, the exception being in the sixth spot where freshman Dan Faria (Portugal) lost a third set tie breaker to Guido Margiotta (6-4, 2-6, 10-6).

On the women's side, a six-person SBU team (8-0, 3-0) suffered an injury and had to withdraw at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, giving UNK two points.

However, the 25th-ranked 'Cats took the other five singles matches in straight sets and took both doubles matches as well.

The Lopers number two team of junior Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) and sophomore Tealyn Trimble (Kearney) put up a good fight, falling by just an 8-5 score.

UNK will play five road duals during “Spring Break”, the first being Monday at NAIA Baker University (Kans.)
