Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams went 3-1 against Colorado Christian and Southeastern Oklahoma State this past weekend in Grand Island.
Both Loper teams were coming off wins over William Jewell on Friday night.
Due to time contraints, the matches against SEOSU were stopped when a team got to five or six points. The Loper women (7-0) beat the Savage Storm, 5-1, while the men (6-3) lost by a 6-0 score.
On Saturday, both Kearney teams swept former RMAC rival CCU by identical 9-0 scores.
The men's loss to Southeast was closer than the score showed as the top doubles team of
Yeswanth Nadella (India) and
John Steinke (Grand Island) lost by a tough 9-8 (5) score.
SEOSU, ranked two spots ahead of the Lopers in the Central Region, won the other doubles matches by 8-3 and 8-2 scores and then took the dual thanks to straight set wins at No. 1-3 singles.
Nadella did put up a fight in the number position against Luka Radulovic before falling (6-4, 7-5).
On the women's side, UNK led the Storm 3-0 after doubles as the number two team of
Kelly Messbarger (Kearney) and
Britni Norfolk (Brashear, Mo.) posted an 8-5 victory. The Lopers took home the win when
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) and
Kristin Weems (Arlington, Texas) each won in straight sets at No. 1 and 2 singles.
UNK hosts NW Missouri State next weekend.
