Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Southwest Baptist women's soccer team scored two goals in the first 42 minutes and then held off Nebraska-Kearney, 2-1, Thursday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.
Â
With the win, SBU improves to 3-1-1 (1-0 MIAA) while the Lopers slip to 2-3 (0-1 MIAA).
Last season, these clubs tied for eighth in the league standings (4-6-2) but SBU snagged the league tourney berth thanks to a 1-0 win at UNK. Sophomore forward Karla Jamison scored that lone goal and she was at it again as she got her team on the score board in the 21st minute after knocking in a cross sent by Elin Hammar.
Â
Right before halftime, Swedish junior Malin Sandin sent a long pass toward the Loper goal that junior Amanda White popped into the net for a 2-0 'Cats lead.
Â
Out shooting SBU 9-5 after the break, UNK got on the board in the 61st minute when senior
Becka Talcott (Denver) turned in a crossing pass by sophomore
Kristyn Otter (Millard North) into her 13th career goal.
Â
Talcott ranks second in school history in both points (33) and goals; Raliegh Mercer is the leader in both categories (36 points on 14 goals).
Â
Sophomore
Montanna Hosterman (Papillion) tried to send the game into extra time as she fired three shots at the SBU net over the final 12 minutes. However, two were high and the other went wide of the net.
Â
Both Hosterman and Talcott ended with five shots. Jamison took eight of SBU's shots with UNK using two keepers in sophomore
Katelin Mielke (first half) and freshman Jackie Paloucek (second half).
"After playing poorly in the first half and giving up two goals, we were able to put together a pretty good 45 minutes in the second half. Â Becka scored a very nice goal off
Kristyn Otter's cross and we created a few really good chances. Â We will rest up and be ready for UCM on Saturday," said Loper head coach
John Maessner.
Â
UNK is at No. 17 UCM Saturday afternoon. These two clubs tied, 1-1, last year in Kearney.
