UNK Beats USF on a Sweltering Day at Cope

Meaghan Pasbrig
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Samantha Rieber knocked in a corner kick by newcomer Meaghan Pasbrig to help the Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team out last Sioux Falls in overtime, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

This was the season opener for both teams. Last year in South Dakota, UNK beat the Cougars, 3-2, in the second game of the fall.

On a very hot and steamy day, the Lopers controlled the tempo but couldn't get a ball past senior keeper Corrin Cook in regulation. For the game, UNK took eight shots to just one for USF.

With just a minute gone in the extra session, Pasbrig lined up for the Lopers 11th and final corner of the game. An Arizona native who played last season at Division I UNLV, Pasbrig hit a perfectly placed ball that found Rieber (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).

Her second career goal, this was a nice comeback for Rieber, who missed the second half of 2012 due to injury.

In goal, sophomore Katelin Mielke (Millard West) earned her first career shut out. This marks UNK's six shut out since the start of 2012.

Also for the Lopers, senior Missy Everson (Pasco, Wash.) had two shots on goal with five players going all 96 minutes, including true freshmen Emma Keele (Hastings H.S.) and Samatha's sister, McKinzie.

UNK hosts SW Minnesota State Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs, who defeated Kearney 3-2 last year, beat Fort Hays State, 1-0, on Friday night.
