Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior Tara Russell scored a goal in the first minute of the second overtime to lift Missouri Western State over Nebraska-Kearney, 1-0, Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.
The Griffons improve to 8-4-1 (5-4-1) while UNK falls to 2-10-1 (2-7-0).
Russell now has scored four of Western's 14 goals this season as she managed to knock in a ball from about eight yards out. UNK tried to clear a ball out but, instead, the deflection found Russell and she scored on the Griffons sixth shot of the night.
Kearney took three shots in the first half while Western couldn't get one off. After the break, the Griffons had the upper hand, taking three shots and then two more in the first overtime.
UNK's seventh and final shot came in the 99th minute by freshman
Marika Van Brocklin (Hastings) but Western keeper Sarah Lyle stopped it. Lyle, coming in with a miniscule 0.48 GAA, has now shut out eight teams this fall.
Van Brocklin finished with team-highs in shots (three) and shots on goal (two) with fellow freshman
Madalynn Doughty (North Platte) also have a shot saved by Lyle.
A bit short handed due to injuries, eight Lopers played all 101 minutes, including Van Brocklin, Doughty and freshman
Carly Brown (Omaha).
UNK hosts NW Missouri State on Sunday.
