Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior
Ellisa Janzen scored a rebound goal in the 78th minute to lift Nebraska-Kearney to a 1-0 win over NW Missouri State Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
With the regular season winding down, both the Lopers (3-10-1, 3-7-0) and Bearcats (6-7-1, 3-6-1) are in the thick of the eight-team MIAA Tournament race.
UNK dominated the first half as they took the game's first five shots and had the ball in Bearcat territory most of the time. However, keeper Ashley Malloy made two saves to keep the contest scoreless heading into halftime.
Coming off a 3-0 loss at Fort hays State, Northwest came out the locker room with some more energy, recording three shots in the first 15 minutes. The best chance at scoring came in the 60th minute when a Cassie Phillips header, off a corner, was saved by Loper keeper
Katelin Mielke (Millard West).
About 20 minutes later, UNK star Montanna Hsterman (Papillion) fired one from about 25 yards out that a diving Mallory managed to save. However, she just deflected the ball and it managed to hang right in front of the goal.
Janzen (Lincoln North Star) raced in and promptly tallied her first career goal. She rejoined UNK in mid-September after being with the squad briefly back in 2012.
Northwest didn't have another great shot attempt with Mielke finishing with three saves and UNK's first shout out since a 1-0 home win over Washburn back in September.
Offensively, Hosterman had four of UNK's 12 shots with Hastings freshman
Marika Van Brocklin taking two.
The Lopers head to Emporia State and Washburn next weekend.
