Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team took 17 shots but ended up tying Emporia State, 0-0, Friday night in Kansas.
 
Still in the hunt for an MIAA Tournament berth, the Lopers are now 3-10-2 (3-7-1) and have 10 points in MIAA play.
 
It was no surprise the game went 110 minutes and ended in a tie. The Hornets (5-5-5, 2-4-5) have now gone four straight games without a goal but have managed to stay in the MIAA tourney race thanks to sophomore keeper Yadira Rivera. 
 
After tonight, she has made 93 saves and shut out six teams this season. Emporia came into the weekend with the fifth lowest GAA (1.07) in the MIAA.
 
"Another great effort from everyone," said UNK head coach John Maessner. "They couldn't have worked harder or fought for each other more than what they did tonight. We had several very good opportunities to score and just couldn't find the back of the net."
 
Having nine of its shots before the break, UNK got two off in the second overtime but Rivera stopped a header from Omaha freshman Carly Brown in the 101st minute and then saved a shot from Papillion junior Montanna Hosterman five minutes later.
 
In between, Loper keeper Katelin Mielke (Millard West) recorded one of her four saves. This marks her second straight shut out of 2014.
 
"We wanted the three points and probably deserved it but will take the one point as it keeps us in the race to qualify for the MIAA tournament," said Maessner. "That's our goal right now.  We look forward to playing them again next Sunday. We will now rest, recover and get back at it Sunday at Washburn."
 
Hosterman and Arizona junior Meaghan Pasbrig each took four shots with seven of those being on goal. Off the bench, Omaha senior Kaitlyn Taylor had two shots in 64 minutes.
 
The Lopers play the winless WU Ichabods Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
