Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior
Montanna Hosterman scored two goals and freshman
Carly Brown added another as the Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team won at Washburn, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in Topeka, Kans.
With the win, the Lopers (4-10-2, 4-7-1) pick up three points and move up to seventh place (13 points) in the MIAA standings. The top eight teams make the conference tournament, which starts November 5th.
Last fall, Washburn beat UNK in the first round of the MIAA's. With today's results, the Ichabods are now 0-15-1 (0-11-1).
Hosterman (Papillion) scored just seven minutes into the contest as she banged one in from 30 yards out. The shot, assisted by junior
Meaghan Pasbrig (Chandler, Ariz.), found the right corner of the box and went over the head of Washburn keeper Tori Fuglister.
Seven minutes later, Brown (Omaha Skutt) tallied her first goal as a Loper as she took a pass from senior
Delanie Phillips (Millard West) and scored from close range.
Early in the second half, Hosterman lined up 40 yards from the 'Bods goal on a free kick. She made the shot, making this her third career game with two goals.
"A great three points for our team and very well deserved. We had two fantastic goals by Hosterman and a great finish by Brown," said UNK head coach
John Maessner. "Delanie also played very well for us, holding the ball and connecting passes for us up front."
Washburn actually out shot UNK, 13-11, and got on the scoreboard in the 74th minute thanks to a breakaway. The Lopers did have four more corners, 8-4, and also recorded one more save, 6-5.
Hosterman finished with three shots while sophomore
Kadie Walaszczyk (Houston, Texas) and freshman
Marika Van Brocklin (Hastings) each took two.
UNK closes out the regular season at home, playing Fort Hays State (10-4-2, 8-2-2) Thursday night and taking on Emporia State (5-6-5, 2-5-5) Sunday afternoon.
"This result comes at such a perfect time for us, bumping us up in the conference standings and putting us in good shape with two home games to go. We're excited to get home and finish our regular season in front of our fans. Our goal will be six points and then we'll see where we stand," said Maessner.
