Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams started their 2013-14 dual schedule by sweeping Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday in Lincoln.
The Loper men, ranked 50th nationally and 8th in the Central, won by identical 9-0 scores with the UNK women, ranked 7th in the region, beat the Tigers and Prairie Wolves by the same margin.
UNK almost pulled off a
"perfect" dual as the women lost just one game against the Tigers.
Things were a bit tougher against
Wesleyan as senior Vanessa Guanawan (Indonesia) and sophomore
Paula Jimenez Sanchez (Spain) won 9-7 at No. 1 doubles and Texas junior
Kristin Weems and Elkhorn freshman Emily Funk were victorious in the second spot by an 8-5 score.
In singles, the Lopers were more dominant with Fink (6-4, 6-1) having the toughest battle.
On the men's side, the doubles teams of
Jack Nicholson (England)/
Kyle Conzemius (Lincoln Pius) and
Yeswanth Nadella (India)/
Neto Cacace (Brazil) each won by 8-2 scores vs.
Doane.
Newcomer
Lucas Garces (Spain) won at 8-0 at No. 4 singles with Nadella (6-1, 6-0) dominant in the first position. Finally, Cozemius/Nicholson won 8-4 in the
Wesleyan dual with Garces (6-4, 6-3) getting past Rene Tortie.
The women host William Jewell this Friday (4:00 p.m.) in Grand Island. The men are off until a February 21st date with WJC.
