Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team closed out the 2014 regular season by sweeping Fort Hays State,
9-0, Tuesday at Harmon Park.
The dual was originally set for Monday but pushed back due to weather.
The Lopers (18-6, 7-3), ranked sixth (NCAA) and eighth (ITA) in the Central Region, have now won 13 of its matches by 9-0 scores.
On "Senior Day", UNK's toughest doubles point came in the second spot where junior
Kristin Weems (Arlington, Texas) and freshman
Emily Fink (Elkhorn South H.S.) managed an 8-6 victory. The pair improve to 15-4, which includes an 8-2 mark against MIAA competition.
In singles, senior
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) was up 6-0, 3-0 in the No. 1 position before her Tiger counterpart retired due to injury. The same scenario happened to Weems (6-2, 2-0) in the second spot.
Both improve to 16-8. In the latest ITA Central rankings, Gunawan is 11th in singles with Weems 18th.
At No. 5 singles, Missouri senior
Britni Norfolk easily won her 10th consecutive match as she bested Katie Hipp (6-0, 6-0). Norfolk is now a team-best 20-4, including a 9-1 mark in MIAA
duals.
Both Loper teams are off until the MIAA Tournament next weekend (April 25-27) in Springfield, Mo. The brackets for that tournament will be released by the MIAA office later this week.
