Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Freshman
Marika Van Brocklin scored her first collegiate goal to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Washburn, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
This was a rematch of last year's MIAA Tournament first round game won by the Ichabods in a shootout. UNK is now 1-3-1 (1-1-0) while WU falls to 0-5-1 (0-1-1).
Controlling much of the action and finishing with seven more shots, the Lopers finally moved ahead in 60th minute when junior Meghan Pasbrig (Chandler, Ariz.) sent a pass down the right side of the field to Van Brocklin (Hastings).
She maneuvered her way past one Washburn defender and her shot, from about 15 yards out, found the left corner of the goal. Over her last two prep years, Van Brocklin tallied 90 points.
UNK kept up the pressure, taking five more shots, several that just missed going into the net. Overall, the Lopers had 10 shots, eight coming after the break.
Omaha junior keeper
Regan Zach stopped three shots to her earn first win in college. Seven different Lopers took a shot, including three by Papillion junior
Montanna Hosterman and two from Omaha freshman
Carly Brown.
"Our players really deserved that one. We didn't play well in the first half and talked about what needed to be done at the break," said Loper coach
John Maessner. "They responded very well and worked extremely hard in the second half. We're proud of this group and the effort they showed. We'll need to keep working hard to continue to get better each day."
UNK begins a four-game road swing Thursday at Missouri Southern State.
