Week 4 Preview: Soccer Hits the Road a Day Early

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team has an unusual week as they have road games Thursday night and Saturday afternoon.

UNK (1-3-1) faces Missouri Southern State (2-3-1) Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and Southwest Baptist (4-1-0) Saturday at high noon. Due to its religious affiliation, SBU prefers not to play on Sunday.

Southern has already played some wild games, beating Division II newcomer Rogers (Okla.) State by a 5-0 score, tying East (Okla.) Central 3-3 while falling at SBU, 4-1.

The Lions are tied for third in the MIAA in goals scored (12) but are 12th in goals allowed (13).

Last year, UNK handed the Lions a 4-1 setback in Kearney. The Lopers scored in the 21st, 24th, 55th and 65th minutes with each goal tallied by a senior.

Southwest is coming off a 14-5-2 campaign in which it went 7-1-1 at home. So far in 2014, they've won four of five with the lone loss coming to Augustana, 5-2.

Junior Kate Jamison is among the MIAA leaders in shots (3.20 per game) and is tied for second in points with eight (four goals). Sophomore Elin Hammar is close behind with six on a goal and four assists.

In goal, junior Cheyenne Forshey has a 1.95 GAA and made 15 saves.

Hosting Fort Hays Thursday afternoon, SBU posted a 2-1 victory at Cope Stadium last year as they got on the board in the 21st and 42nd minutes. Jamison scored the first goal on a pass from Hammar.

UNK, Northeastern State and Lindenwood entered the week with 1-1-0 league marks. Junior Montanna Hosterman leads the MIAA in shots per game (3.80) junior keeper Regan Zach tied for 10th in saves per game (3.60).

Junior Katelin Mielke returned to the field last weekend, playing the entire second half and both overtimes in a loss at Fort Hays State. She was 8-7-3 as the Lopers starting keeper in 2013.

UNK remains away from home next week too as they face league power Central Missouri and Lindenwood.
