Northwest Scores Late to Beat the Lopers

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior Katelynn Lindsey scored on two free kicks to help Northwest Missouri State rally past Nebraska-Kearney in overtime, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Maryville.

The Bearcats improve to 3-7-3 (2-5-1) while the Lopers are now 4-7-3 (3-4-1).

UNK was poised for the win after senior Meghan Pasbrig (Chandler, Ariz.) took a centering pass from sophomore Emily Kosch (Columbus Scotus H.S.) and scored in the 75th minute. On a play that started with freshman Michaela Hoffman (Fruita, Colo.) getting the ball to Kosch, this was Pasbrig's second goal of 2015 and came from six yards out.

About 12 minutes later, the Lopers were called for a foul. Lindsey lined up from 35 yards out and found the top left corner for her first goal of the season.

Just 1:40 into the extra session, this same scenario happened again with the game winner coming from 30 yards and finding the far post. On the day, UNK was called for 14 fouls and Northwest nine.

"Heartbreaking. We deserved to win that game; we played very well and did everything right up until the 88th minute," siad UNK head coach John Maessner. "We fouled them unnecessarily and gave them a free kick. Credit to her but we should not have given them that opportunity. We then did the same thing a minute into overtime after talking about it at the end of regulation. We don't give ourselves a chance to win when we make mistakes like that."

The 'Cats out shot UNK by two, 10-8, with the Lopers having a slight edge in corners, 6-4.Individually, Pasbrig and Norfolk junior Evie Sintek each took two shots with freshman keeper Ali Hirschman (Millard South H.S.) making three saves.

UNK host Emporia State Friday night at Cope Stadium.

"We have our final home games next weekend. We are looking forward to having our families and alumni in town as we make our push for position in the MIAA standings," said Maessner. "This group can still set the standard for UNK soccer and finish the year very strong."
