Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The top-ranked Central Missouri Jennies scored in the 13 minute, and then added two second half goals, to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.
Ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time in program history, UCM (9-0-0, 3-0-0) is now 36-1-3 over its last 40 MIAA regular season games. With the loss, UNK (3-4-2, 2-1-0) sees a two-game win snapped.
UCM got in the board in the early going as speedy redshirt freshman Jada Scott got loose on the right wing and found teammate Megan Woolley in the box. The sophomore banged the ball home for her seventh goal of the fall.
UNK played with the Jennies throughout but never converted its offensive chances. The Lopers had two more corners than the Jennies, 5-3; UCM came in having allowed just 16 corners all year. Three of the corners came in a row midway through the second half.
Senior
Ashtin Pawloski (Hastings H.S.) had a shot blocked by the Central Missouri defense early in the first half with another scoring chance coming after the ball ricocheted off junior
Evie Sintek (Norfolk) in front of the Jennies goal.
"If you don't finish chances, you can't win a soccer game," said
John Maessner. "But we created plenty so that's encouraging. That's the best team there is in the country and we proved to ourselves we can play with them."
In the second half, UCM out shot UNK by a 10-1 margin with sophomore Kayla Hamner scoring in the 65th minute after taking a pass from sophomore Baylie Edwards. Five minutes later, senior Julie Ireland tallied her team-best ninth goal after a throw in by freshman Annie Parscale landed near the UNK goal.
"Number one comes to town and, with our youth, you're a little bit in awe. In the first half, we were kind of standing around watching them run all over the place. We talked about that at the break and were much better in the second half," said Maessner.
Sophomore keeper Ana Dilkes recorded one save to record her fifth shut out of 2015 with Loper keeper
Ali Hirschman (Omaha) making five saves in 76 minutes of work.
UNK hosts the Lindenwood Lions Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
