Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior Gabrielle Makatura converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute to help Fort Hays State beat Nebraska-Kearney, 1-0, Friday night in Hays, Kans.
The Tigers improve to 9-7-1 (6-4) with the Lopers falling to 4-9-4 (3-5-2).
In game where Hays held an 11-6 advantage in shots, a foul early on provided the winning margin. Makatura scored for the second time this year and then senior keeper Kami Kaniaupio made five saves to preserve the shut out.
Both teams had additional changes to score after Makatura's goal. Sophomore Silvana Romero hit the crossbar in the 43rd minute with a header by Loper freshman
Micheala Hoffman (Fruita, Colo.) stopped by Kaniaupio in the 87th minute.
Besides Hoffman, five other Lopers took a shot, including shots on goal by freshman
Tori Weber (Lincoln S.E. H.S.) and sophomore
Emily Kosch (Columbus Scotus H.S.). UNK had an advantage in corners, 6-4, with freshman keeper
Ali Hirschman (Millard South H.S.) making three aves.
Kearney ends the regular season Sunday at Emporia State.
