This is an
MIAA Tournament first round game; the winner advances to Friday's semifinal at a site to be determined. The opponent will either be third-seed Northeastern State or sixth-seed Missouri Western State. NSU is hosting MWSU at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
The seventh-seeded Lopers (5-9-4) only other postseason appearance came two years ago. That fall, UNK tied Washburn, 1-1, in Topeka but lost the first round game due to a shootout, 4-2.
Earlier this year in Edmond, Kearney beat UCO (11-5-2) by a 1-0 score as Arizona senior Meghan Pasbrig scored in the 37th minute. Omaha freshman
Ali Hirschman recorded her second career shutout by stopping eight shots. That was the 'Chos only home setback of 2015 as they were 6-0-1 in the other games played at Tom Thompson Field.
Currently on a four-game winning streak, No. 2 seed UCO is led by freshmen phenoms Katie Killion (53 shots; 21 points on eight goals) and Kentia Kokis (42 shots; 15 points on seven goals). Kokis had four shots in the loss to the Lopers with Killion having none in coming off the bench.
Defensively, three different keepers have seen action, the busiest being sophomore Elle Stover (7-4-2, 1.46 GAA).
UNK heads South with a 2-3-2 road record. The Loper defense has allowed just one goal in each of the last three games with Hirschman's 85 saves leading the MIAA. Offensively, six Lopers have four or more points, including sophomore
Reina Horikawa (seven), juniors
Evie Sintek (six) and
Kadie Walaszczyk (four) and freshman
Kelsie Ienn (four).
