Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams started the dual season in style by going a combined 6-0 this weekend in Pueblo, Colo.
This marks the third time in four years UNK has gone out to Colorado in the fall and come back with three dual wins for each team.
On the men's side, UNK beat Metro State (
6-3) and Colorado Mesa (
8-1) on Friday and the host CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves on Saturday (7-2). The Loper women were equally as dominant, beating CSUP by a 9-0 score and besting both
Mesa and
Metro by identical 6-3 margins.
In singles, sophomores
Joey Richards (No. 1) and
Aaron Reekie (No.5), along with junior
Lucas Garces (No. 3), each went 3-0 with the Lopes sweeping each doubles match in the win over Mesa.
The women saw junior
Sthefani Rodriguez (No.1) and sophomore
Emma Neil (No.5) both go 3-0 with the doubles teams of Neil and sophomore
Jadyn Trimble (No. 3) and Rodriguez and freshman Sherry Sun (No. 2) having identical 3-0 marks.
Rodriguez (Venezuela) worked hard to go a combined 6-0, rallying in three sets vs. Pueblo (3-6, 7-6, 10-1) and winning a doubles tie breaker against Mesa, 9-8 (3).
UNK finishes out the fall at the ITA Central Regional at Springfield, Mo., in early October.
