Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods used two first half goals and another late one to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in Topeka, Kans.

The win in this non-conference tilt is the first for WU first-year head coach Chris Jones (1-3-2). The two teams will play an MIAA game on October 25th in Kearney.

Washburn grabbed the lead for good in the 16th minute when Lincoln East graduate Emily Stauffer headed in a corner taken by sophomore Morgan El-Attrache. Then, right before the intermission, junior Michelle Keleher found the back of the net after teammate Cadence Bourne booted a free kick about 50 yards.

UNK (1-3-2) almost cut the deficit in half in the 55th minute but headers from senior Montanna Hosterman (Papillion-LaVista South H.S.) and freshman Ciera Clark (Omaha North H.S.) both hit the cross bar.

Hosterman did get the Lopers on the board in the 81st minute when she banged one in from 40 yards out on a free kick. She now has 40 career points on 15 goals; Becka Talcott holds the Loper records in both categories (42 points & 16 goals).

Just four minutes after Hosterman's goal, freshman keeper Ali Hirschman (Millard South H.S.) stopped two shots, her sixth and seventh saves of the contest. However, freshman Paige Swanson scored in the 86th minute on a rebound shot.

On the day, Hosterman took a team-high three shots and was one of six Lopers to play all 90 minutes.

"We had two disappointing losses this weekend. We know we're better than the past three results," said Loper head coach John Maessner. "We'll recover tomorrow, work hard to improve and find out about the character of this team. The coaching staff believes in our group of players and we know we can do some very good things this year."

Next weekend, UNK hosts Missouri Southern State (Friday) and Southwest Baptist (Sunday) in MIAA games.
