Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Rockhurst Hawks tallied a goal with six minutes left to tie Nebraska-Kearney, 1-1 (2 OT), Sunday afternoon in Kansas.
Both teams are now 0-0-2 on the young season.
In a game that featured a combined 17 shots and nine corners, UNK made the most of its opportunities as Hastings sophomore
Marika Van Brocklin tallied an unassisted goal in the 51st minute. Her second career goal, the shot came from 25 yards out and found the upper left corner of the goal.
Coming off a 14 win season and picked to finish second in the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conference), Rockhurst out shot UNK 14-3 and tallied seven more corners. However, they didn't get on the board until Courtney Silberberg scored at 84:50. Taking a pass from teammates Meghan Kilkenny and Julia Bartolacci, she scored from 18 yards out.
UNK had a chance to win in the first overtime but a shot by senior
Montanna Hosterman (Papillion) was saved by Hawk keeper Caitlin Winschel. Rockhurst had three chances to score in the final 10 minutes with freshman
Ali Hirschman (Millard South H.S.) recording her fourth and final save at 109:45.
"This was a much better performance from our team against a highly ranked Rockhurst squad," said UNK head coach
John Maessner. "We showed a glimpse of the potential that we have. If we can continue to improve and stay focused, we can do some good things this year. Our players are excited about working hard for each other and we can't wait to get back on the field Thursday night at Wayne State."
UNK also is at Augustana (Saturday) next weekend.
