Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Cassidy Menke scored in the 95th minute to lift Missouri Western State to a 2-1 overtime victory over Nebraska-Kearney Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
This was the Lopers second straight overtime loss.
The Griffons (8-3, 3-1) had a player advantage over the last nine minutes as UNK senior co-captain
Kadie Walaszczyk (Houston, Texas) was given a red card in the 86th minute.
Despite being shorthanded, UNK made a push to score early in overtime. However, the Griffs fought off the attack and eventually moved towards the Loper goal.
From the right wing, Millard West graduate Paige Phipps sent a pass to Menke, who chipped the ball into the lower left corner of the Kearney net. The eight-yard shot was Menke's team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The scoring began in the 33rd minute when Papillion native Bridget Blessie was taken down hard by a UNK defender near the end line. The officials awarded a penalty kick and Blessie banged it home.
Right after halftime, the Lopers (3-7-1, 0-4-0) tied things up when Omaha sophomore
Sami Stock sent a ball towards the MWSU goal from the right wing. Keeper Lexie Martin couldn't control it and freshman
Molly Willis (Kearney H.S.) was happy to hit the loose ball into the net for her first collegiate goal.
Walaszczyk, just back from the disabled list, almost put UNK ahead soon after but Martin made saves in the 50th and 54th minutes. Overall, MWSU out shot UNK by three, 10-7, with the Griffs also having an advantage in corners, 5-2.
Besides Walaszczyk and Willis, Hastings junior
Kaitlyn Pawloski had a shot on goal for Kearney. Finally, Stock (Millard South H.S.) played 79 minutes coming off the bench.
