Men Pick Up Key Regional Win

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Justin Nguyen and sophomore Georges Wakim pulled an upset at No. 1 doubles to help 21st-ranked Nebraska-Kearney beat 26th-ranked Ouachita Baptist, 5-3, Friday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.

This neutral site dual had NCAA Tournament ramifications as UNK (13-2) came in ranked second in the Central Region with the Tigers, from Arkadelphia, Ark., fifth.

Nguyen (Louisville, Colo.) and Wakim (Egypt) are now 3-1 as doubles partners after a 9-7 decision over the 18th-ranked duo of Vitor Oliveira and Luis Chab. UNK also won at No. 3 doubles, 8-2, and then took four of the six singles matches. One singles match went unfinished.

Wakim is now 9-2 after a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 5 singles with junior Mohab El Zanaty (Egypt) going over 100 wins after a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Last year in this same location, OBU (9-5) managed a 5-4 win over the Lopers as they won four singles matches, including one in three sets.

Both Loper teams head to Emporia State on Saturday to face the Hornets.
