Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior
Marika Van Brocklin scored from 40 yards out seconds before halftime and redshirt freshman
Allie Prososki made five saves as Nebraska-Kearney and No. 16 Fort Hays State fought to a 1-1 tie (2 OT's) Friday night in Kansas.
This was the first of two meetings with the Tigers. The next one, on October 28th at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field, will count in the MIAA standings.
The Tigers (4-0-1) came in having scored at least two goals in each of its first four games. They struck pay dirt in the fourth minute when junior Thalya Dwyer took a centering pass from teammate Dani Harris and found the corner of the Loper goal.
In a game where the teams combined for 17 shots, the Lopers were looking at 1-0 halftime deficit. However, Van Brocklin (Hastings H.S.) caught Tiger keeper Abbie Flax napping and she tallied her third career goal from 40 yards out at 44:42.
Both teams had several chances to score in the second half and in the extra sessions. For the Lopers, freshman
Megan Merkel (Millard West H.S.) was just wide with a shot at 84:11 with sophomore
Tori Weber (Lincoln S.E.) seeing her penalty kick in the 73rd minute being disavowed due to an incorrect rule interpretation.
A hand ball led to Weber's PK, which she converted. However, the Lopers moved into the box just prior to the kick. Instead of a re-kick, the ball was awarded to the Tigers and play continued with the score remaining 1-1.
"This was a very impressive team effort that should have resulted in a win. We made our penalty kick and weren't allowed to retake it. I've never seen that before," said UNK head coach
John Maessner. "We're very proud of the effort and we couldn't have asked our players to give more than they did. We will work with the MIAA to see what can be done."
Later, junior
Kaitlyn Pawloski (Hastings H.S.) took UNK's third and final corner in the 101st minute. Weber led Kearney with three shots, one being on goal. She also was one of four Lopers (2-2-1) to go all 110 minutes.
On Sunday, the Blue & Gold host the Washburn Ichabods (2-2-0) at 1:00 p.m. WU's non-conference game at Emporia State on Friday was postponed.
