Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney track & field team had 21 top five finishes at the
Concordia Classic Sunday night in Seward.
The non-team scoring meet featured teams from around the area, including MIAA member Northwest Missouri State.
Winning their respective events were Kearney senior
Cody Wirth (1,000 meters) and O'Neill junior
Emily Everitt (high jump) with Texas senior
Preston Foley (60 meters), Omaha junior
Thomas Stopak (long jump) and Cairo sophomore
Grant Myers (pole vault) finishing in second place.
Wirth paced a field of 15 by running a 2:30.93, nearly four seconds faster than the runner up and the sixth best time in school history. He ran a 2:32.31 two weeks ago in a meet at Lincoln.
Already ranked 12th nationally in the event at 5-6.25, Everitt won the women's high jump by going 5-5. Myers also already had hit the provisional mark earlier this year and he'll move up a bit this week after clearing 15-10. He was second based on judge's decision; Fairfield junior
Bailey Stapleman was third and also went 15-10.
This was a strong event for the
Jacob Bartling
Lopers as Bertrand freshman
Tyrell Younger came in fifth (15-5), making him a first-time provisional qualifier (currently 28th). The men also finished fourth through seventh in the mile, led by Rushville senior
Cole Wellnitz (4:18.56; converted 4:15.31).
Next, to reach the 60 meter finals, Foley ran a 6.99. He then tied his personal-best (6.98) to finish second in the finals. The time ties him for ninth in Loper lore.
Stopak went 23-0 to be second in the long jump with California senior Bevan Wehmoff third in the high jump (6-6.25). Finally on the men's side, Grand Island
Colton Stuhr was third in the triple jump (44-11), Hastings freshman
Justin Engberg placed fourth in the 60 hurdles (8.56) and Elm Creek sophomore Jacob Bartling was fifth in the shot (52-.85).
With his throw, Bartling is a provisional qualifier (30th) for the first time this winter.
In the women's pole vault, UNK had three of the top nine finishers, led by Lincoln senior
Mandy Rathje (5th/11-3). In the triple jump, Grand Island freshman
Mackenzie Puckett was fourth (36-0) and Columbus freshman
Cassidy Dyhrkopp fifth (35-3.75).
On the track, Holdrege sophomore
Gabby Gracia (4th/10:48.51) and Auburn junior
Molly Dibben (5th/10:52.29) cracked the top five at 3,000 meters with Crofton senior
Dani Riesberg fifth in the 400 (1:01.31).
UNK is split up next weekend, hosting the
UNK Indoor Invitational Friday and Saturday in Cushing Coliseum. At the same time, some Lopers will be in Lincoln for the two-day
Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
