Kearney, Neb. – The nationally-ranked Midwestern State Texans swept Nebraska-Kearney,
7-2 (men) and
9-0 (women), Friday night in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The UNK men are now 4-1 while the women are 3-2.
The Loper women, ranked fifth in the Central Region, saw why MSU (2-0) is ranked 21st in Division II and third in the South Central. The Texans allowed 10 combined points in doubles and took each singles match in straight sets.
In doubles, Papillion junior
Emma Neil and Spanish junior Amanda Alavarez lost by just an 8-6 score in the third spot. Alvarez then dropped her No. 3 singles match to 19th-ranked Bianca Duff (6-3, 6-1).
At No. 2 singles, Spanish freshman
Ana Royo put up a fight but fell to Eirini Kontaki, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Finally, Missouri sophomore
Camryn Parnell lost her No. 6 singles match by a 6-2, 7-5 score.
The Loper men, ranked 21sth nationally and fourth in the Central, ran into an MSU squad that is 15th in D2 and tops in the South Central.
The Texans took all three doubles matches, allowing just two points in the process. UNK got on the board when Texas junior
Aaron Reekie beat Dylan Hall at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-3.
In the next match to finish, Egyptian junior
Georges Wakim almost upset fifth-ranked Ramon Toyos in the top spot but dropped a third-set tie breaker, 3-6, 6-2, 10-4. Finally, Egyptian senior
Mohab El Zanaty posted a hard fought win at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
On Sunday, the UNK men face the 16th-ranked Cameron Aggies in Lawton, Okla. The Loper women will also face CU but it'll be a scrimmage.
