Kearney, Neb. – The 21st-ranked Nebraska-Kearney men's tennis team won five singles matches to upset 16th-ranked Cameron,
6-3, Sunday afternoon in Lawton, Okla.
On a quick two-match road swing, UNK is now 5-1.The Loper women also were in Lawton on Sunday but just held a scrimmage with CU.
From the Lone Star Conference, the Aggies (3-4) got out to a 2-1 lead as 17th-ranked Felipe Oyarzun and Mateo Velasco won 8-5 in the top spot over junior
Raul Rodriguez (Spain) and sophomore
Pepe Balado (Spain).
CU also won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, with senior
Mohab El Zanaty (Egypt) and sophomore
Alvaro Arias (Spain) getting UNK on the board with an 8-5 victory at number three.
In singles, the Lopers won four matches in straight sets with Balado (ASA College, Miami) getting the clinching victory from the fourth spot in the lineup (6-2, 7-6).
Ranked 18th in the Central region, junior
Georges Wakim (Egypt) beat Vincius Santos, 6-1 & 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Santos came in ranked seventh in the South Central. Next, El Zanaty won at number three (6-4, 6-4) with senior
Justin Nguyen taking his match (6-1, 6-4) at number. In the Central, El Zanaty is ranked seventh and Nguyen 15th.
Balado's sweep came against Velasco, who is ranked 19th in the South Central. Finally, Texas junior
Aaron Reekie capped a strong weekend by outlasting Julen Gutierrez (4-6, 6-4, 13-11) at number five.
UNK has another tough weekend coming up as it faces 38th-ranked Drury (Mo.) and 39th-ranked Harding (Ark.) on the road.
