Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team made a triumphant return to the Buffalo County Fairgrounds by sweeping rival Fort Hays State,
9-0, Wednesday evening.
The MIAA dual was set for Harmon Park but weather moved things inside. UNK (8-7, 4-2) normally plays its indoor matches at the Grand Island Tennis Center; its last home duals at the Fairgrounds were over four years ago.
At number three doubles, junior
Emma Neil (Papillion) and
Amanda Alvarez (Spain) are now a team-best 9-5 after an 8-0 victory. Senior
Sthefani Rodriguez (Venezuela) and sophomore Sherry Sun (China) had a bit of a battle, 8-4, one spot higher in the lineup.
In 10 of the 12 singles sets, UNK allowed one or zero points. Freshman
Ana Royo (Spain) pushed her win streak to six (6-1, 6-1) from the second spot in the lineup with Neil almost blanking Macy Moyers (6-1, 6-0) at number four singles. Royo and Neil both have 11 singles wins in duals this year.
Both Loper teams host Northwest Missouri State this Sunday at Harmon (1:00 p.m.). A recently scheduled road men's dual at Hastings College (March 30th) has been canceled due to weather.
