Fourth Straight NCAA Trips for Tennis Teams

Senior Lucas Garces
Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams have both received at-large bids to the 2017 NCAA Tournaments.

This is the fourth straight year UNK has made both the men's and women's 48-team NCAA fields.

The 29th-ranked Loper men (11-9) are the No. 4 seed in the four-team Central Regional and will play at top-seed and 18th-ranked Northwest Missouri State (17-3) on either Saturday or Sunday. First serve is to be announced and there's a good chance the dual will be held indoors.

In March at Harmon Park, NW posted a 7-2 win over UNK as they won two singles matches in three sets.

The Loper/Bearcat winner advances to the "Sweet 16" May 9-12 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The other Central Regional dual features No. 2 Southwest Baptist hosting No. 3 seed Washburn. The Bearcat/Ichabod winner also advances to Florida.

The Loper men are in the NCAA's for a 16th time and previously made the Sweet 16 in 2012, 2011, 2006 and 2005.

On the women's side, UNK (13-11) is the No. 5 seed in a seven-team regional and will face No. 4 seed Central Oklahoma (13-8). The dual will be held Monday, May 1st, in Tahlequah, Okla. First serve is TBA.

Back on March 10th in Grand Island, UCO beat UNK by a 6-3 score. The 'Chos won in three sets at number four, five and six singles.

The Loper/Broncho winner faces 20th-ranked and top-seeded Northeastern State on Tuesday, May 2nd.  The winner heads to Altamonte Springs May 10-13. Also in the Central, 41st-ranked and No. 2 seed Southeastern Oklahoma State is hosting a four-team event with the winner headed to Florida.

UNK is in the NCAA women's tourney for a 10 time and previously advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2012, 2010 and 2009.
