Strong Showing in Fall Finale in OKC

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team finished up the 2019 fall season by winning 15 matches at the ITA Central Regional this weekend in Oklahoma City.

The three-day event, featuring singles and doubles brackets, was hosted by Central Oklahoma. Winners advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach next month. 

In the "A" doubles draw Papillion junior Claire Neil and Kansas freshman Brooklyn Hunter went 3-1 to reach the semifinals. The unseeded pair upset Jessica Purdy and Viktoria Mackova, seeded eighth, from Emporia State in the quarters by a close 8-7 (8-4) score. UNK's run ended with a loss to senior Logan Morrissey and sophomore Svea Crohn of Washburn on Sunday morning, 6-3, 4-6, 10-1.

Morrissey managed to get by Kazakhstan junior Zhanel Turarbek in three sets in the first round of the "A" singles bracket. She managed to reach the quarters with Turarbek bouncing back to win her first three consolation matches by identical 8-3 scores. On Sunday her run ended in the semifinals to Betka Gomarova of Northeastern State.

Also for the Lopers, Neil went 3-1 in the "B" singles bracket. She recorded a three set victory in round one before back-to-back straight set decisions. She then fell to in the quarterfinals to Augustana's Grace Goble.

UNK will hit the courts again in early 2020.
