Week 2 Preview: Lopers Head to the Rocky Mountains

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney soccer team heads back to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) territory this weekend with two games in the Western Colorado Invite.

This tournament was originally set to be played at Western Colorado University (formerly Western State College) in Gunnison. However, field renovations weren't completed in time so the event was moved to Colorado Mesa University and Grand Junction. Elevation in GJ is 4,583 feet, considerably lower than the 7,703 feet up the road in Gunnison.

UNK (0-0-2) will face the CMU Mavericks (2-0-0) Friday night at the WCU Mountaineers (0-2-0) on Sunday afternoon. New MIAA member Newman University is the other team in the field. Check the Loper schedule page for kickoff times and media links.

The Lopers are 1-3-0 all-time vs. CMU with three of those games coming when UNK was still an RMAC member. Kearney has faced WCU just once, winning 1-0 in a 2017 game also played at Mesa.

The Blue & Gold logged 220 minutes of work last weekend, out shooting the opposition by a 17-15 margin and having two ties to show for that effort. UNK has taken five corners in each half with senior keeper Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic) recording 11 saves. This marks the first time the Lopers have had back-to-back shutouts since posting four in a row late in the 2016 season.

Offensively Norfolk senior Maddie Love has a team-high four shots with the threes at three apiece. The trio includes South Dakota junior Kassidy Kirsch, Missouri sophomore Bridget Barker and Omaha freshman Emma Weis.

The Lopers start head to Washburn and host Fort Hays State next weekend.
