Tri-City Neighbors Battle to Exhibition Tie

Kearney, Neb. – Senior forward Perla Navarro scored in the 68th minute as Nebraska-Kearney tied Hastings College, 1-1, in an exhibition game Tuesday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster field.

UNK downed another Great Plaints Athletic Conference (GPAC) member, Concordia, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Lopers final scrimmage of the fall comes Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Gretna Elite Academy.

"(Play compared to Saturday) step down first half, step up or same second half. We didn't come out with the right energy the first half and that's what preseason is for … to learn these lessons," UNK head coach Chloe Roberts said. "I'm kind of glad we got that lesson today. They need to know they have to come out from the beginning whistle and give 100 percent and have that energy."

Both teams subbed liberally, UNK using 22 different players and the Broncos 21. Each club also used two different keepers with the Lopers starting five true or redshirt freshmen.

The Broncos got on the board in the 21st minute when 5-10 senior Jacqueline Gilbert got free down the middle of the field, and with two Loper defenders around her, banged one it from about 25 yards out. She was one of three Hastings players to finish with two shots; Navarro (Los Angles) took a game-high three with Kansas redshirt sophomore Cammie Davis at two. She scored two goals on Saturday.

"Second half we showed the fight, we showed the passion, the energy. And we got a great finish by Perla," Roberts said. "It was a great run by her, right in behind the defense which is what we've been working on."

Like Gilbert, Navarro got lose in the middle of the field and sent a shot to the bottom left corner of the net. It pinged off the wheel of the goal and sat on the line. After time was stopped and the officials had a short conversation, the goal was counted.

"It literally hit the bottom pocket of the wheel and that's why the ball just stayed still. She couldn't get it more in the corner if she tried," Roberts said. "To get on the score sheet is a good confidence booster for her."

UNK had a 3-2 edge in corners with the Broncos taking one more shot, 9-8. Redshirt freshman Emery Mounce (Spring Hill, Kan.) had four saves in the second half with freshman Rainna Daharsh (Gretna) stopping three shots over the first 45 minutes.

"Hastings is a good team. They are going to do well in their conference and probably better than they were ranked (fifth out of 13 in the preseason poll)," Roberts said.
