Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

A 6-0 Start

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's tennis team wrapped up the dual season this fall by getting three wins in Pueblo, Colo., on Thursday and Friday.

The Lopers (6-0) dominated Colorado State-Pueblo, 7-0, on Thursday and then had work to get past Lone Star Conference members Lubbock (Texas) Christian, 5-2, and Texas-Permian Basin, 6-1, on Friday.

UNK swept the CSUP Thunderwolves, who've now dropped 38 duals in a row, by surrendering a total of 11 points in the match. Sophomore Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) and junior Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) took their singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores with both Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius X) allowing just a single point in winning. Finally in doubles, Ranaivo and sophomore Masha Hatouka won 6-0 at number two.

The LCU Chaparrals are a first-year program but started things in style with a 7-0 win over Division III Colorado College. After losing to UNK, they gave traditional RMAC power Metro State a battle before falling by a 4-3 score.

Hatouka and Ranaivo won 6-2 at number two doubles with Bernthal and Plachy taking their number three match by the same score to put UNK up 1-0. Ranaivo (#3) and Plachy (#6) had easy straight set wins but Bernthal (6-4, 3-6, 10-8) and Hatouka (6-3, 7-5) worked harder to secure the dual victory.

After a very long match against LCU, the Lopers had to quickly turnaround to take on the UTPB Falcons (1-2). Both Ranaivo and Hatouka along with Zamorano and junior Melisa Becerra (Colombia) won their doubles matches by 7-5 scores. Ranaivo and Hatouka were down 5-4 at one point.

In singles, Ranavio went the distance to win at three (3-6, 6-0, 10-4) with UNK taking four other matches in straight sets. That included Becerra at one (7-6, 6-1) and Plachy at six (6-0, 6-0).

UNKs last fall event is the annual ITA Central Regionals in Oklahoma the first weekend in October. The multi-day tournament features singles and doubles brackets with the winners advancing to the National Small College Championships in November.
