Lopers Win in Colorado & Kansas

Box Score 1 Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams went their separate ways this past weekend, the women in Colorado for three duals and the men in Topeka for the annual ITA Central Regional.

The women beat Colorado State-Pueblo, 6-1, on Thursday but saw Friday duals against Colorado Mesa and Dallas Baptist canceled due to weather. Meanwhile, the men racked up 20 wins in singles and doubles draws at Washburn.

UNK rolled past the ThunderWolves as the allowed just two combined points in doubles and won five singles matches in straight sets. Senior Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and teamed with junior Masha Hatouka (Belarus) to win 6-0 at three doubles. Finally, freshman Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) won 6-1, 6-1 at six singles and 6-1 at one doubles playing with junior Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.).

At the ITA's, freshman Maksym Kulish (Ukraine) went 4-1 to reach the "A" singles semifinals. To get to the final four, he managed a 12-10 third-set victory in the quarterfinals. Next, freshman Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) went 3-1, bouncing back from an opening round loss to reach the consolation semis.

In the "B" singles draw, sophomore Alex Jaulin (Australia) and freshman Ahmed Abdelaziz (Egypt) both went 3-1, Jaulin reaching the semis and Abdelaziz being the consolation champ. He placed first thanks to 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) effort in the finals. Finally in doubles, freshman Tom van den Dungen (The Netherlands) paired with grad transfer Aaron Osmond (England) to reach the "A" doubles quarters.

The women head to their ITA Regional this weekend in Edmond, Okla., with the men going to Omaha for the UNO Invitational.
