UNK Goes Toe to Toe with #21 Northwest, Falls 1-0

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Makenna West scored her fifth goal of the season to lift 21st-ranked Northwest Missouri over Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Maryville.

The Bearcats (9-3-0, 6-1-0) win a third straight game to remain tied for first place in the MIAA standings (18 points) with No. 9 Central Missouri. The Lopers (2-7-4, 0-4-4) had battled Northwest to scoreless draws in both 2023 and 2024.

In the 19th minute, Northwest regained possession after a Loper throw-in near midfield and a couple of passes found junior Abby Overbay streaking down the left sidelines. She tapped the ball to a trailing West who went low right for the game's lone score. West finished with game-highs in both shots (nine) and shots on goal (five) in playing 73 minutes.

UNK was out shot by just an 18-13 margin with NW having one more effort on goal, 7-6. The 'Cats did take seven more corners with senior keeper Lily Ellis recording her eighth shutout of the fall.

The Lopers got six saves from junior keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln) and two shots from four different players; senior Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.), Gracie Perez (Kearney) and Mia Lang (Papillion) and sophomore Chloe Edmunds (Boise, Idaho).

UNK has just one contest next weekend, a Friday afternoon tilt at Emporia State (7-4-2, 4-1-2).
