UNK Competes in Second Big Road Meet

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney track and field team had multiple top 10 finishes at the annual Ichabod Invitational this weekend in Topeka.

The large two-day meet began Friday afternoon and ran until Saturday evening. The competition ranged from area NCAA Division I schools through junior colleges.  

Kearney redshirt junior Lily Novacek (weight throw) and Blair freshman Reece Ewoldt (3,000) both came in second-place with Lexington freshman Will Kulhanek (400) and Blair freshman Greta Galbraith (pole vault open) finishing third.

Ranked fourth nationally in the weight throw, Novacek had a toss of 62-3 to finishing runner up in a field of 45 with sophomore Joia Perry of D1 Central Arkansas the winner (63-9). Next, Ewoldt was one of four Lopers in the top 10 thanks to her 9:53.99. She already ranked second in school history in the event and gets a bit closer to All-American Morgan Benesch (9:48.57; Feb. 2017). McCool Junction freshman Kassidy Stuckey (4th/10:05.06), York junior Brynn Hirschfeld (5th/10:05.68) and Omaha junior Noelle Abels (10th/10.05.78) all join the all-time top 10 in this event as well.

Finally, Kulhanek ran a 48.64 to vault into third in the 400 annuals, Galbraith and Lincoln senior Lilyan Lam (5th place) both cleared 10-11.50, Kearney senior Colby Spangler finished fourth in the triple jump (48-1.25), Kansas senior Brooklyn Staab was fourth in the high jump invite (5-3) and Kansas sophomore Toree Slavik was fifth in the weight throw (55-4.25).

Some Lopers will compete in Cushing Coliseum next Friday with others heading to Lincoln for the NU Tune Up.
